All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should therefore be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use. Such safety checks are commonly referred to as ‘periodic inspection and testing’.

How often is a periodic inspection required?

Your electrics should be inspected and tested every:

• 10 years for an owner-occupied home.
• 5 years for commercial property.
• 5 years for a rented home.
• 3 years for industrial property.

Once completed you will be issued with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).

Every year in the UK electricity alone causes 70 deaths and 350,000 serious injuries in the home. Furthermore, house fires (a third of which were caused by dangerous electrics) caused almost a billion pounds worth of damage and caused 258 deaths. This statistic has increased 10% from the previous year.
